Summary

They say the Shabah doesn’t exist.

They’re wrong.

I know because I was one of them—an assassin trained to kill without question and vanish without a trace. Five years ago on a mission, the unthinkable happened. We were ambushed by one of our own, and when the man I loved bled out in my arms, I did the only thing I could to survive. I ran.

Now I’m back in Amagi with a plan. I’ll uncover who betrayed us, and every name on that list will pay. Slowly. Painfully.

But my plan never factored in a sharp-witted merchant with an easy smile.

The attraction between us is immediate and before I know it, Nico has slipped past my defenses. My heart wants to trust him. With my secrets. With my scars. With the parts of me I swore died with Kas. But he has ties to one of the city’s most powerful families, and he’s dangerously perceptive.

He’s a distraction I can’t afford. I need to finish what I started.

Content Warnings

  • This is a fictitious story with a main character who is an assassin. As such, there will be on-page scenes of murder by various means, including with blade and poison. Some deaths are mildly graphic. This is integral to the story and the main character. No main characters die.
  • There is a scene in Chapter Four that includes political discussions by characters who do not have the well-being of the general population in mind. It closely resembles the political climate in the United States of America in 2025. If this is distressing to you, you can skip this chapter with little impact on the main storyline.
  • Brief mentions of off-page physical and mental abuse of children.
  • Brief mentions of off-page torture. No details are mentioned.
  • Mentions in Chapter 18 of one minor character experiencing multiple miscarriages in the past.
  • One brief instance of cutting at the beginning of Chapter 24. If you’d prefer to avoid this part, you can skip the short paragraph that starts with, “I unsheathe one of my daggers…” and you’ll miss all of it.

If any of this is distressing, please skip this novel. Your well-being is important.

Reviews

This is dark fantasy done RIGHT — brutal, emotional, and dripping with grief, rage, and longing.
